Introduction

I have kept this introduction short, enabling me to squeeze in as many stories and new photographs as possible.

The reason for this, my third book is, since I started writing a monthly article in the Surrey Herald newspaper some two years ago and more recently the Village Echo, I've received many letters and calls. Most have been questions and sightings on birds, but many people have also asked, "When am I going to write another book".

This has been very flattering, but as I've mentioned in my previous books, putting pen to paper does come naturally to me, but after much deliberation I decided that maybe we do need a more educational book on our local bird life. This I have tried to achieve with some factual stories, the odd poem and as many new photographs as space allows.

I obviously cannot cover every species around Surrey; but by giving an overall picture, for a two and a half-year period from January 2000 hopefully my book will show that birds still exist in these areas.

I'm able by writing the text in a diary vein I'm able to mention some of the people who have contacted me over this period of time and this is my way of thanking them for their contributions towards this book.
